Primal Cravings Book Review & Recipe

This new Primal Cravings cookbook review & recipe I am so excited to tell you about!  This is Dan from Primal4Life bringing you ”Gyro Taco Salad & Tzatziki Guacamole” from the latest cookbook offered through Julian Bakery; Primal Cravings: Your favorite foods made Paleo.  Talk about a recipe book that is jam-packed with some incredible meals!!!  And tonight we got to sample a really good one! 

From the moment I saw the book, it reminded me of one of my elementary school-books; because it is so thick, hard-covered, and well made.  Yeah I’m talking about ‘80’s stuff here folks, when things were made with quality and pride.  Even the cover’s design is just a very simple burger, yet looks so darn cool!  When you start checking out what’s in the book, you get to meet Megan and Brandon Keatley…. You learn about them, and how they started eating this way, how they launched www.Health-Bent.com as well as becoming CrossFit coaches.  They also get into why we should eat this way, providing some guidelines and suggestions, and even ideas on getting your kitchen setup properly!  I really enjoyed that and felt that a lot of people will benefit once they pick this book up. 

Then we get into recipes…. Wow, the recipes!!!  Just looking at the very first meal, “Hazelnut Coffee Pancakes”; really?!?!?!  I need these like now!!!  Their “rise ‘n shine” section is off the hook, and goes strong all the way to “Bacon Ten Ways.”  Yeah you read that right, mmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!  The book is then broken down with “meats & mains”, “sides & salads”, “snacks”, “sweets”, and “basics”.  Tonight’s dinner recipe that we broke the book in with is from the “meats & mains” section, and did not disappoint!  We modified it slightly, using turkey instead of lamb, and Napa cabbage rather than romaine.  Don’t worry, it was still outstanding, flavorful, and had that Greek flavor that I have oh-so missed over the past few years.

Ingredients (for the Taco Salad):

• 1 lb ground turkey

• ½ large yellow onion

• 2 garlic cloves, minced

• ½ tsp dried oregano

• ½ tsp dried thyme

• ¼ cup chicken stock

• ½ tbsp lemon juice

Himalayan Salt to taste

• 3 cups Napa cabbage, chopped

Ingredients (for the Tzatziki Guacamole):

• 1 ripe Haas avocados

• ½ English cucumber

• ½ tbsp fresh mint

• ½ tbsp fresh dill

• ½ tbsp lemon juice

Himalayan Salt to taste

Directions (for the Taco Salad):

1)      In a large sauté pan, brown the turkey.  Once the turkey looks about halfway cooked through, add the onions and garlic.

2)      Continue to cook down until onion is softened.

3)      Add the oregano, thyme, coriander, chicken stock, lemon juice, and Himalayan Salt.  Cook about 5 minutes more, until the stock has reduced a bit.

4)      Chop the Napa cabbage and serve with the turkey meat and a spoonful of tzatziki guacamole.

Directions (for the Tzatziki Guacamole):

1)      Shred the cucumber with a box grater over a tea towel.

2)      Twist the tea towel up, and squeeze it over the kitchen sink to remove excess water from cucumber.

3)      Blend avocados, squeezed cucumber, mint, dill, lemon, and Himalayan Salt in a food processor until smooth.

• 10 minutes

Cook Time:

• 20 minutes

Serves:

• 3

Just reading these ingredients, I’m sure you can tell that it had a lovely taste, and you can see that it is 100% pure Grade-A Healthy!  And now you know why Julian Bakery decided to put this book on their shelf, available to you!  You know who else thinks highly of this book?  Mark Sisson….  Yeah, the Man, the Myth, the Legend.  Well, he’s no Myth, he’s legit, and he gave his stamp of approval on Primal Cravings, and I can see why.  The book not only has over 125 Paleo/Primal meals in it, but it’s easy to read, and has some quality images, along with metric conversions, nutritional info on the meals, and much more!
